, and today we are announcing the availability of the Windows 11 2025 Update (also known as Windows 11, version 25H2). This year’s annual feature update (version 25H2) will continue the recent Windows feature update trend of being delivered in an optimized way using servicing technology. So, let me share details on version 25H2, explain how to get it, and provide information for commercial and education customers.

A streamlined, lean and security-focused update

Windows 11, version 25H2 will be delivered as an enablement package (eKB). This means that it contains all the recently announced features in Windows 11, version 24H2.1 Both versions use a shared code base and servicing branch, streamlining the update. It also means that you'll continue to see new features released to Windows via monthly updates as part of our continuous innovation model2. As part of the Microsoft Secure Future Initiative commitment, Windows continues iterating and improving its security features and posture to help protect customers from security threats in our software and services. Version 25H2 includes significant advancements in build and runtime vulnerability detection, coupled with AI assisted secure coding. We’ve designed version 25H2 to address and mitigate security threats in adherence to a robust security development lifecycle (SDL) policy and requirements. Version 25H2 is also leaner due to removed legacy features such as PowerShell 2.0 and Windows Management Instrumentation command-line (WMIC).

How to get it

Windows 11, version 25H2 will be delivered using servicing technology (like that used for the monthly update process), providing a fast and reliable installation experience. Availability begins today via a controlled feature rollout2 for eligible devices running Windows 11, version 24H2 for users who have already turned on the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” toggle. If we detect that your device may have an issue, such as an application or driver incompatibility, we may put a safeguard hold in place and not offer the update until that issue is resolved. We will expand the rollout breadth over the next few months and share more information on the Windows release health hub. For more information on ways to get the update, watch this video.

Information for commercial and education customers

Version 25H2 is now available via Windows Autopatch and the Microsoft 365 admin center.3,4 We recommend that commercial organizations begin targeted deployments to validate that their apps, devices and infrastructure work as expected with the new release. New Windows 11, version 25H2 commercial functionality includes Wi-Fi 7 for enterprise connectivity. It also offers IT admins the ability to remove select pre-installed Microsoft Store apps via Microsoft Intune or Group Policy on Enterprise and Education devices. See how to get ready for Windows 11, version 25H2. This update continues the annual Windows 11 feature update cadence, with new feature updates released in the second half of the calendar year. This new version resets the 24 months of support for Home and Pro editions and 36 months of support for Enterprise and Education editions. Note that select features and enhancements initially released disabled by default in version 24H2 will be enabled by default in version 25H2. You can find more information on IT tools (including policies) to support version 25H2 in the Windows IT Pro Blog.

Staying protected and productive

As always, I recommend that you update your devices to this latest version of Windows 11, which provides you with the latest features, security improvements and control. We will closely monitor the update and share timely information on the rollout status and any known issues (open and resolved) across both feature and monthly updates via the Windows release health hub and @WindowsUpdate. Please continue to tell us about your experience by providing comments or suggestions via Feedback Hub. 1Feature parity begins with the November 2025 security update. Windows 11 eligible devices on Windows 11, version 23H2 (and earlier versions) require a full operating system (OS) swap to update to Windows 11, version 25H2. 2More information on: Delivering continuous innovation in Windows 11 and Controlled Feature Rollouts. 3Downloads in the Microsoft 365 admin center and similar channels may be delayed. 4Windows 11, version 25H2 will become available via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) on Oct. 14, 2025, with the October security update. ]]>

Organizations can deploy Copilot+ PCs to get the fastest, most intelligent Windows PC ever built. Utilizing powerful new silicon with an NPU (neural processing unit) capable of an incredible 40+ TOPS (trillion operations per second), Copilot+ PCs provide organizations an exceptional AI endpoint for work, and a foundation for your chip-to-cloud solution stack. Copilot+ PCs unlock industry leading AI acceleration with up to 2x faster NPU performance than MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.[1] New ways of working are flourishing with next-generation AI—more than 90% of Fortune 500 companies are using Windows 11[2] and are ready for the age of Copilot. Now, with Copilot+ PCs, organizations can deploy devices purpose-built for AI with Copilot for Microsoft 365,[3] enabling a powerful, advanced solution for AI at work. Organizations who use these devices will be equipped with new levels of performance to handle demanding workloads, unique AI experiences, all with the most advanced Windows security. With exciting new features like Recall, users can find mission-critical information faster, turn ideas into action and safeguard their most sensitive data.

“The new AI-based (NPU) processor significantly supports our AI-driven workflows, taking our services to the next level.”

- Christian Glanz, CIO, Deutsche Vermögensberatung (DVAG)

Delivering powerful performance for transformative impact

The first Copilot+ PCs available feature the advanced Snapdragon X Elite Arm processors from Qualcomm which are incredibly efficient, providing up to 22 hours of local video playback[4] or up to 15 hours of web browsing.[5] Copilot+ PCs are designed to work smoothly with business apps and Windows 365 Cloud PCs, providing the seamless Windows experiences organizations expect. Devices with Intel and AMD processors will follow later this year. Nearly 90% of the total app minutes that users spend in apps today have native Arm versions, providing the most efficient and performant experience.[6] And if they need to run apps in emulation, they’ll experience a significant performance boost with the new Prism emulator for app compatibility and performance. Emulated apps on PCs running the Snapdragon X Elite are more than 2x faster than previous generation Windows Arm devices running Windows 11 22H2.[7]

Unlocking productivity superpowers

With Copilot+ PCs organizations now have advanced AI experiences at the edge. A recent study shows that employees can save more than an entire workday, or 10 hours, each month just by using AI just for routine tasks like finding content.[8] Leveraging the power of the NPU, Copilot+ PCs enable new features like Recall,[9] Live Captions with translation[10] and Windows Studio Effects. These new features can unlock productivity benefits for users in organizations of all sizes.

Recall instantly

In today’s workplace, people are struggling to stay afloat in a flood of meetings, messages, files and information. With Recall, in just a few words for context, you can find almost anything you’ve seen on your desktop.[11] Just describe it using text or visual search, and Recall will show you snapshots of the most relevant content in a way that feels like having photographic memory. Seamlessly take the next step in your workflow right from the snapshot, including relaunching the original content in a webpage or Microsoft 365 app.[3] We know that privacy is important. With enhanced privacy controls, you can decide which information Recall can capture. Copilot+ PCs are also designed so that even the AI running on your device can’t access your private content. In addition, IT admins can use Microsoft Intune to disable Recall from saving any snapshots, and new policies are coming later to enable IT to centrally filter specific apps and websites. Recall: Describe it to find it with just a few words for context.

Enhancing communication with Live Captions and real-time translation

Organizations today operate in an increasingly global environment with fluid, dynamic workstyles and a diversity of languages, abilities and locations. To help empower employees and serve customers anywhere, Live Captions can translate more than 40 languages into English, including speakers in real-time videocalls, recordings and streamed content. More effective meetings anywhere with Windows Studio Effects

Today’s fluid workstyles also mean that we aren’t always in an office for important meetings. With Windows Studio effects, you can put your best self forward in videocalls with features like flattering portrait lighting, creative filters and natural-looking eye contact, while enhanced noise canceling, and background blur shut out distraction. Features are easily accessible in Quick Settings, so you can make changes on the go. User interface of Windows Studio Effects

Patch Tuesday’s origin and history On January 12, 2002, Bill Gates published a company-wide email announcing the creation of the Trustworthy Computing (TwC) initiative. It represented a paradigm shift, pushing security teams to shift their thinking toward securing features themselves across the breadth of our products. From this important initiative, we consolidated our security update process into a predictable cadence of monthly Patch Tuesday updates. Highlights from the 20-year tenure of Patch Tuesdays below show the ongoing evolution of this critical, well-established practice:

2003–2007

  • Patch Tuesday updates begin. They introduce supporting patch management processes, including Windows Update and Microsoft Update services.
  • Windows Vista and later Windows 7 are released. Both incorporate enhanced security features, User Account Control (UAC), Windows Defender and improved firewall capabilities.

2008–2012

  • New out-of-band (OOB) updates address imminent threats like the Conficker worm vulnerability.
  • Security Development Lifecycle expansion provides a robust set of best practices and guidelines for developing secure software.
  • New tools help organizations deploy and assess the status of security updates. These include Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA).
  • Windows 8 features improve security measures. We welcome Secure Boot, Windows Defender enhancements and further developments in User Account Control (UAC).

2013–2017

  • Windows 10 is introduced. It represents a fundamental shift towards a "Windows as a service" model. It’s accompanied by the inaugural release of the Windows update history pages, more commonly known as release notes.
  • New security enhancements aim to provide stronger protection against malware, unauthorized access and credential theft. Device Guard, Credential Guard and Windows Hello are developed and released.
  • Windows Update for Business goes live. It allows organizations more control over when and how to deploy Windows updates.
  • The quality and reliability of security updates continue to be the focus of the conversation. “In each new monthly quality update, we add another layer of security, one that tracks emerging and changing trends in malware and viruses” (John Cable, September 20, 2017).
  • We take proactive steps to bolster transparency and align with General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). Organizations gain the confidence they need to keep devices up to date.

2018–Present

  • An industry-wide collaboration begins around proactively patching firmware. It follows a public disclosure of Spectre & Meltdown hardware vulnerabilities. Monthly quality updates serve as a tool to expand microcode updates to devices.
  • The use of machine learning optimizes Windows update experiences as proactive measures across Windows updates continue. AI becomes a tool to serve Windows 10 feature updates.
  • Rigor and transparency grow: “The scale and diversity of the Windows ecosystem requires us to take a data-driven approach to quality and to leverage automation for testing, validation and distribution" (Mike Fortin, former CVP, December 10, 2018). The discussion of quality validation efforts via Patch Tuesday includes the Pre-release Validation Program (PVP), Depth Test Passes (DTP), Monthly Test Passes (MTP), the Windows Insider Program (WIP) and the Security Update Validation Program (SUVP).
  • Windows release health dashboard offers everyone a single pane of glass to view known issues across feature and monthly quality updates.
  • In response to 2020's COVID-19 emerging pandemic, remote work-related tools receive greater focus. We address vulnerabilities in Remote Desktop Services and Microsoft Teams, as well as extend End of Support for certain active versions of Windows.
  • Known Issue Rollbacks (KIRs) help devices quickly return to a productive state if inadvertently impacted by an update issue.
Though there are more highlights and lowlights along that journey, Microsoft remains committed to our mission. Our investments help every individual and organization around the world to achieve more, while staying protected and productive with Windows.

Our principle-based Patch Tuesday evolution

The notions of security and productivity have evolved as drastically as the world of technology. As Brad Smith recently shared in his Nov. 2 blog post A new world of security: Microsoft’s Secure Future Initiative, those efforts are only intensifying. This means great challenges and opportunities for Microsoft’s vision to align on empowering everyone to achieve more through its products, including Windows. Windows is a critical tool and more important than ever to how folks work and play. We will continue to focus on evolving the update experience. Specifically, we’ve raised the quality of learning, adapting and serving our increasingly diverse customer base around the world, adhering to four principles for the monthly Windows servicing process:
  • Predictability: The Windows monthly release cadence should align predictably to the second Tuesday of every month.
  • Simplicity: Everyone should be able to manage to a simple, regular and consistent patching experience. Doesn’t matter if you’re an individual Windows user or an IT manager overseeing your organization. You shouldn’t need to stop what you're doing to rigorously test an update before deploying it.
  • Agility: In today’s computing landscape, security threats demand quick responses. We must provide all Windows users with updates quickly without compromising quality or compatibility.
  • Transparency: To simplify the update process for individuals and for businesses large and small, everyone should have access to as much information as they need. You should be able to understand updates in advance. This includes comprehensive yet clear release notes, guides for common servicing tools, access to assistance and a feedback system.
Releasing monthly Windows updates of the highest quality remains critical. Our commitment to improving and evolving Windows patch quality informs efforts and commitment towards quick detection of issues, rapid mitigations, clear and prescriptive communications, and continued learning and improvements. With new hotpatching technologies proving themselves across Azure Fleet and Windows Server Azure Edition, the future for patching is bright as we continue to pursue fast, reliable, secure updates for the best possible update experience. We’re also investing in new AI technology and talent, as well as in leadership and cross-team partnerships, to ensure that we can keep you protected and productive for the next 20 years of Windows.]]>

A streamlined update Windows 11, version 23H2 is a scoped, cumulative release, meaning that it contains all the recently announced features as well as some new enhancements. Chat is now Microsoft Teams (free1) and is pinned by default to the taskbar. When you click to launch Microsoft Teams, you will discover a mini communications experience that makes it possible to chat, call, meet and create a space for community groups to come together, organize and share ideas in just a click or two. Its compact size makes it easy to place the window anywhere on desktop, allowing you to passively keep tabs on your conversations as you browse the web or connect with your communities. You can learn more in the latest Communities in Microsoft Teams blog. In addition, there are some changes to the way you manage your applications. Under All apps on the Start menu, Windows 11 system components will show a “system” label. Currently, the page for managing these components is in System Components listed in Settings > Apps > Installed Apps. This is now on its own page in Settings > System > System Components. With these changes, Windows 11 makes it easier for you to connect to the people and things that are important to you.

How to get it

As Windows 11, version 23H2 shares the same code base and servicing branch as Windows 11, version 22H2, we will deliver this feature update using servicing technology (like that used for the monthly update process), providing a fast installation experience. Consumers with eligible devices running Windows 11, version 22H22 who are interested in experiencing these new enhancements when they are available, can choose to do so by opening Settings > Windows Update, turning on “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available,” and selecting “Check for updates” (for more information on ways to get the update watch this video). If we detect that your device may have an issue, such as an application incompatibility, we may put a safeguard hold in place and not offer the update until that issue is resolved. We will begin the auto-updating rollout process in the coming months and share more information on the Windows release health hub.

Information for commercial and education customers

Version 23H2 is now available through Windows Server Update Services (including ConfigurationManager), Windows Update for Business, and the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC)3. We recommend that commercial organizations begin targeted deployments to validate that their apps, devices and infrastructure work as expected with the new release. This update continues the annual Windows 11 feature update cadence, with new feature updates released in the second half of the calendar year. This new version resets the 24 months of support for Home and Pro editions and 36 months of support for Enterprise and Education editions. Note select features and enhancements initially shipped disabled by default in version 22H2 will ship on by default in version 23H2, including Copilot in Windows (in preview)4. You can find more information on IT tools (including group policies) to support version 23H2 in the Windows IT Pro Blog.

Staying protected and productive

announced the latest Windows 11 innovations that bring the power of AI to enhance what you can achieve using your PC, plus many new features and experiences ranging from accessibility to security. Windows is a tool that more than a billion people around the world use to connect, learn, play and work. In this blog I’ll share how to get the new Windows 11 features, details on our approach to availability and further Windows roadmap information.

How to get the latest innovations

We are committed to delivering continuous innovation to Windows 11 to provide you with the best experiences, when new features are ready, via our familiar processes. Today, Copilot in Windows (in preview) and many of the newly announced features will start to become available, including Windows Backup to transfer your files and settings to your new Windows 11 device1, voice access for log in and text corrections, and Passkey to replace passwords for apps and websites. Windows 11 devices will get new functionality at different times, as we will be gradually rolling out some of these new features over the coming weeks initially via controlled feature rollout (CFR) to consumers. Consumers with eligible devices running Windows 11, version 22H2 who are interested in experiencing these new enhancements now, including Copilot in Windows, can choose to do so by going to Settings > Windows Update and turning on ”Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” and then select "Check for updates." We anticipate broad availability for most new features by the November 2023 security update release for all devices2.

New in the Microsoft Store on Windows

Today, the following Windows apps and experiences are available for Windows 11 devices in the Microsoft Store3. To get these select “Get updates” in Microsoft Store > Library and search by title.
  • Clipchamp with auto-compose
  • The new Outlook for Windows (also available by toggling it on from Windows Mail and Calendar)
  • Instant Games - a new experience allowing users to instantly play select casual games without the need to install and download
  • AI-enhanced versions of the following apps start rolling out now to a small percentage of consumer users (with full availability targeted in the coming months)
    • Paint4
    • Photos
    • Snipping Tool

New experiences for developers

For our developers, we are sharing new information on familiar dev tools and announcing the general availability today of developer experiences recently announced at Build ’23, including Dev Home, a productivity companion for developers on Windows, and Dev Drive, a new storage volume delivering performance and security for developer workloads.

Information for commercial and education customers

Most new Windows 11 features will be enabled by default in the October 2023 optional non-security preview release for all editions of Windows 11, version 22H2, including the Windows 365 Boot and Windows 365 Switch capabilities2. IT admins who want to get the new Windows 11, version 22H2 features can use a newly announced policy to enable optional updates for their managed devices5. To give admins time to plan and prepare managed devices for deployment, Copilot in Windows with Bing Chat Enterprise6 is off by default behind a temporary enterprise feature control.

Windows 11 2023 Update

As announced in July, the Windows 11 2023 Update (version 23H2) will be released in the fourth quarter of 2023. This new update will have the same servicing branch and code base as Windows 11, version 22H2 and will be cumulative with all the newly announced features. For devices on version 22H2, the 2023 Update will be delivered via a small enablement package (eKB)7. This continues the annual feature update cadence, with new feature updates released in the second half of the calendar year. This new version resets the 24 months of support for Home and Pro editions and 36 months of support for Enterprise and Education editions.

Experience the latest innovations in Windows 11

As I have often previously noted, installing the latest updates is the best way you can keep your Windows device protected and productive with the latest features and innovations. If you have not yet moved to Windows 11, now is a great time to do so, and Windows Backup is available to help you get up and running quickly and easily. Panos Panay announced the release and availability of the Windows 11 2022 Update, the latest version of Windows 11. Windows is a key component of how more than a billion people connect, learn, play and work. In this blog I’ll share how to get the 2022 Update (also known as Windows 11, version 22H21), details on our approach to delivering continuous innovation including improvements to the update experience, and information for commercial and education customers.

How to get the update

Starting today, the first major update to Windows 11 is now available for users who want to update. Our launch approach to Windows 11 leverages our well-established update systems and processes. The measured and phased rollout will offer the update via Windows Update when data shows that your device is ready, as our objective is to provide a quality update experience. We will initially ramp up the offering availability in the first weeks as we monitor quality signals. If we detect that your device may have an issue, such as an application incompatibility, we may put a safeguard hold in place and not offer the update until that issue is resolved. To learn more about the status of the Windows 11 rollout, safeguard holds and which holds may be applied to your device, visit Windows release healthLearn more about the ways to install Windows 11.

Windows 11 devices

Users with eligible devices running Windows 11, version 21H2 who are interested in experiencing the latest feature update and are ready to install this release on their device can choose to do so by opening Windows Update settings (Settings > Windows Update) and selecting Check for updates2. For more information on the 2022 Update experience for Windows 11 devices, watch this video. Windows 11 update screen

Windows 10 devices

If you are running Windows 10 today, you can check to see if your device is eligible (i.e., meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 11) to upgrade using the PC Health Check app. You can then check to see if Windows 11, version 22H2 is ready for your specific device by opening Windows Update settings (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update) and selecting Check for updates3,4. If your device is eligible and the upgrade is ready, the option to download and install will appear: If you are ready to install Windows 11, simply select Download and install5,6. For more information on the Windows 11 upgrade experience for Window 10 devices, watch this video. Delivering continuous innovation and value

Our delivery approach leverages the well-established feature and monthly security update systems and processes used for the +1.4 billion Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices we have shipped and serviced over the past six years. Windows 11 will continue to have an annual feature update cadence, released in the second half of the calendar year that marks the start of the support lifecycle, with 24 months of support for Home and Pro editions and 36 months of support for Enterprise and Education editions. We are committed to delivering continuous innovation by releasing new features into Windows 11 with increased frequency via our servicing technology (like a monthly update) and Microsoft Store updates, in addition to our annual update process. Our goal is to provide you with the best experiences year-round, when new features are ready based on quality and reliability, via our familiar processes. Today we are also announcing that a new set of experiences including the Tabbed File explorer, considered a component of the 2022 Update for all editions, will be ready this October. We will share more information and documentation when we initially make these features available. We plan a phased rollout timed with the October optional non-security preview release for these features and then they will be made broadly available in the November 2022 security update release7. Going forward we will continue to announce, document and deliver new features and experiences when they are ready (learn more). We have listened to feedback on the overall Windows Update experience and are excited to announce two substantial improvements to the update experience for both feature and monthly updates for the Windows 11 2022 Update.
  • Smaller and faster installation of updates: We have significantly reduced the download size of feature updates, by ~450MB for many users. We’ve also reduced download and installation time of the monthly cumulative update, as well as reclaimed hundreds of megabytes of disk footprint to give back to the user. Learn more about these improvements.
  • Windows Update and carbon awareness: Windows will try to schedule update installations at specific times of day when doing so may result in lower carbon emissions. Many electrical grids are powered by multiple sources, including renewables and fossil fuels. When available, Windows 11 will now prioritize installing updates in the background at times when greater amounts of clean energy sources (like wind, solar and hydro) are available (find out more in this article).

Information for commercial and education customers

Windows 11 is built on the consistent, compatible and familiar Windows 10 foundation you know, and it was designed for hybrid workforces. You can plan for, prepare and deploy Windows 11 alongside Windows 10 using the same processes, policies and management applications. November 2021 Update to focus on productivity, management and security. Today, I’m sharing how we will deliver the November 2021 Update, how to get it, details on the revised Windows 10 update release cadence including the new Windows 10 Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) edition, and some positive news on the pace of the Windows 11 rollout.

Our approach to update availability and rollout

Hybrid and remote environments for working, learning and playing have become the new normal, and we understand how important and central your PC is to your life. As a result, we are taking the same measured approach to the rollout of the November 2021 Update as we have with previous releases, to help enable a smooth update. We will be throttling up availability over the coming weeks to ensure a reliable download experience for all, so the update may not be offered to you right away. In these cases, we will not offer the feature update until we are confident that you will have a good update experience.

How to get the Windows 10 November 2021 Update

The November 2021 Update is available initially to users with select devices running Windows 10, version 2004 or later who are interested in the latest features and are ready to install this release on their device. If you would like to install the new release, open your Windows Update settings (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update) and select Check for updates. Eligible devices may also be offered the option to choose the Windows 11 upgrade. If the update appears, you can simply select Download and install to get started. Once the download is complete and the feature update is ready to install, we’ll notify you so that you can pick a convenient time to finish the installation and reboot your device, ensuring that the update does not disrupt your activities. Devices running Windows 10, version 2004 or later will have a faster overall update experience with the November 2021 update, because the update will install like a monthly update. For more information on how to get the November 2021 Update, watch this video. To learn more about the status of the November 2021 Update rollout, known issues and new information, visit Windows release health.

Release cadence and support

We will transition to a new Windows 10 release cadence to align with the Windows 11 cadence, targeting annual feature update releases. We are now renaming the servicing option for releases to the General Availability Channel starting with the November 2021 Update (Note: this replaces the previous “Semi-Annual Channel” term for the servicing option). The next Windows 10 feature update is slated for the second half of 2022. We will continue to support at least one version of Windows 10 through Oct. 14, 2025. As a second half (H2) of the calendar year release, Home and Pro editions of the November 2021 Update will receive 18 months of servicing and support, and Enterprise and Education editions will receive 30 months of servicing and support beginning today.

Information for commercial customers

We recommend that commercial organizations begin targeted deployments to validate that their apps, devices and infrastructure work as expected with the new release. Windows 10, version 21H2 is now available through Windows Server Update Services (including Configuration Manager), Windows Update for Business and the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC)[1]. You can find more information on IT tools to support Windows 10, version 21H2 in the Windows IT Pro Blog. Today also marks the availability of Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021, which provides customers with access to an option for their special-purpose devices and environments, such as manufacturing or healthcare systems, or other uses which require longer term device update stability. This new client LTSC edition is supported for five years (Note: the new Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 edition is also available today and has a 10-year support lifecycle).

Staying protected and productive

I have often previously noted that being on the latest version of Windows provides you with the latest features, security improvements and control. We recommend that you update your devices to the latest version of Windows 10 or upgrade eligible devices to Windows 11. Today, based on the positive rollout update experience and user feedback we have seen to date, we are advancing the pace of the rollout faster than we previously anticipated, and are now making the Windows 11 upgrade more broadly available to eligible Windows 10 devices[2]. As a reminder, all editions of Windows 10, version 2004 will reach end of servicing on Dec. 14, 2021, and Enterprise and Education editions of Windows 10, version 1909 will reach end of servicing on May 10, 2022. After these dates, devices running versions 1909 and 2004 will no longer receive monthly security and quality updates containing protections from the latest security threats. We will closely monitor both the Windows 10 November 2021 Update and the Windows 11 upgrade experiences and share timely information on their rollout status and known issues (open and resolved) across both feature and monthly updates via the Windows release health hub and @WindowsUpdate. Please continue to tell us about your experience by providing comments or suggestions via Feedback Hub. Note: [1] It may take a day for downloads to be fully available in the Volume Licensing Service Center across all products, markets and languages. Windows 11 availability begins both for new devices pre-loaded with Windows 11 and eligible Windows 10 devices. Windows continues to be integral to how more than a billion people connect, learn, play and work. Windows 11 brings you closer to what you love, empowering your creativity and productivity while advancing critical elements such as security and reliability. In this post I’ll explain the measured and phased rollout process for Windows 11, and how to get the upgrade when your device is ready.

About the upgrade to Windows 11

Our launch approach to Windows 11 leverages the well-established systems and processes used for the 1.3 billion Windows 10 devices we have shipped and serviced for over five years. We will use a measured and phased process in offering Windows 11 as we have done with Windows 10 feature updates. Our objective is to provide you with a smooth upgrade experience. We will begin to offer the upgrade to eligible new devices first1,2. Then, as with previous rollouts, we will study device health data and other signals to determine the pace at which Windows 11 is offered via Windows Update. Over time, we will make Windows 11 available to existing (in-market) devices based on hardware eligibility, reliability metrics and other factors that impact the upgrade experience. If you have a Windows 10 PC that’s eligible for the upgrade, Windows Update will let you know via the Windows Update Settings page when it’s available. We expect all eligible Windows 10 devices to be offered the upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022. Oct. 4, 2021 also marks the start of the 24-month lifecycle for the Home and Pro editions of Windows 11.

Information for commercial and education customers

Windows 11 is tailor-made for today’s hybrid work and learning environments. We have modernized the overall user experience, while still maintaining a familiar feel. In fact, Windows 11 is built on the consistent, compatible and familiar Windows 10 foundation you know. You can plan for, prepare and deploy Windows 11 alongside Windows 10 using the same processes, policies and management applications. For new information about the latest features for commercial organizations, see Windows 11 available today to empower your hybrid workforce. If you're an IT administrator, we recommend that you begin targeted deployments now as part of your regular Windows Update motion. For a list of the latest resources and tools, see our post on Tools to support Windows 11 deployment. In addition, to help make Windows 11 deployment easier, there are new capabilities coming in Endpoint analytics to help you assess your organization's readiness for Windows 11 and hybrid work at scale. You can learn more in the Microsoft Endpoint Manager blog. In addition, Microsoft built the Windows 11 Readiness report in Update Compliance to help IT administrators identify which devices meet the Windows 11 minimum system requirements and are capable of an upgrade, and which are not capable and why. Windows 11 is available through familiar channels and processes including Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Windows Update for Business, and the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC)5 for phased deployment using Microsoft Endpoint Manager or other endpoint management solutions. Oct. 4, 2021 marks the start of the 36 months of servicing support lifecycle for Enterprise and Education editions of Windows 11. As it is being released in the second half of the year, the version number for this original release of Windows 11 is 21H2.

Protected and productive

As I’ve noted in past blogs, being on the latest version of Windows provides you with the best in creativity, protection and productivity. This has never been truer than with Windows 11! Windows 11’s minimum system requirements enable a new era of experiences, reliability and security. As Panos Panay shared in June, this is the first version of a new era of Windows. And, for customers who are using a device that is not eligible for Windows 11, Windows 10 is a great place to be. Windows 10 will be serviced through Oct. 14, 2025 and we previously announced that the next feature update to Windows 10 is coming very soon, continuing to offer you both support and choice with Windows. As we closely monitor the measured and phased rollout of Windows 11, we will continue to share timely information on the status of the rollout and known issues (open and resolved) across all Windows feature and monthly updates via the Windows release health dashboard and @WindowsUpdate.
