and continuing to build stronger security. We're excited to share the details of our AI browser announcement and other innovations we're showcasing at Ignite 2025 below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0AoFWipAMM Jump to the following sections to learn more:

Introducing Copilot Mode

Today, we're bringing the Copilot Mode that consumers can already experience into the work browser—powered by Microsoft 365 Copilot and with the safety foundations, security and controls that IT teams expect. In fact, early adopters of Copilot Mode motivated us when they quickly started asking: "Is there a work version available?" They too were excited by the potential and yet wary of risking work data. Copilot Mode in Edge for Business is a collection of agentic, proactive, and contextual features powered by Microsoft 365 Copilot. IT and security teams can enable advanced AI when they're ready. With Copilot Mode on, the browser is transformed into an intelligent partner that works with your teams' context, anticipates needs, and accelerates workflows. New productivity gains can be achieved by tapping into signals from your own work data through Microsoft Graph and your specific browser context. As a result, not only can the browser streamline tasks for you, but it can also go beyond the generic, to provide solutions that are tailored to you and your work. Organizations are adopting AI at different rates, and even within a single organization, teams may be moving at different speeds. We respect that. Copilot Mode is designed to meet you where you are, offering an explicit toggle that you can turn on to step into the most advanced AI browsing. This means you only need one browser to get it all: advanced AI and secure browsing for the enterprise. Simply put: with Copilot Mode, you can start AI browsing when your organization is ready. To begin with, Copilot Mode includes these experiences: Agent Mode streamlines tedious work by automating multi-step workflows. Time-consuming tasks can be handed off, so your workforce stays focused on what matters. To ensure control, Copilot Mode will not be automatically enabled. After enabling Copilot Mode, you set up Agent Mode separately by turning it on and specifying a list of approved sites where it can operate. Agent Mode is limited to these sites. For employees, there are clear visual cues when they are in Agent Mode, and they can interrupt the process at any point. Our recommendation is to start exploring Agent Mode with a short list of approved sites. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXZReHZJaRY The Copilot-inspired new tab page combines search and chat in one intelligent box, and offers quick access to files, calendar, and personalized prompts—keeping everything your workforce needs at their fingertips. It's also the starting point for the Daily Briefing—a curated summary of meetings, tasks, and priorities based on browsing tabs and the graph. No more digging through emails or juggling apps—your workforce can stay focused on what matters most. Agent Mode and Daily Briefing require a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. The New tab page of Edge for Business, showing the M365 Copilot input field, and three columns with Calendar, Copilot Prompts, and M365 Files.

Multi-tab reasoning and other AI upgrades

We're also excited to announce new features that leverage your browser context to make everyday browsing smarter. Think about the time wasted jumping between tabs and trying to piece together information. With multi-tab reasoning, Copilot can analyze content across up to 30 open tabs—whether they're web pages, internal sites, PDFs, or Microsoft files—and deliver nuanced, context-rich answers without the need to switch back and forth. No more manual comparisons or endless toggling—Copilot does the heavy lifting so your workforce can focus on decisions, not data gathering. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIZFzXoCofs It doesn't stop there. Copilot can also retrieve pages from your browsing history over the last three months using natural language. No need to retrace steps, or remember exact titles or URLs—just ask, and Copilot finds what's needed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqHt_p8gNNc And for video content? YouTube summarization lets Copilot summarize videos and answer questions about their content—so your workforce gets the insights without sitting through the entire clip. The result: less time wasted, fewer interruptions, and more focus on what matters most. Video summarization is planned for additional video services in the future. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9bLpA0QxBY

Secure AI browsing controls

Here on the Edge for Business team, we recognize safe AI browsing starts with choice and trust. This is why we offer a system of safety, when it comes to AI browsing. Foundationally, it starts with Enterprise Data Protection. Microsoft 365 Copilot ensures prompts, responses, and files stay within your tenant, with Microsoft acting solely as a data processor—not using your data to train models or for advertising. This foundation is present for all your engagement with Copilot in Edge for Business, so long as you are logged in with an eligible Entra ID. As mentioned, Copilot Mode is an explicit step that must be taken first, to generally enable advanced AI capabilities. As such, we expect to bring more advanced AI innovations to you through Copilot Mode. For specific features, we will also have an additional "gate", in terms of requiring an explicit decision to enable. This is the case with Agent Mode, and it even has several additional layers of protection. First, IT teams must enable it and specify sites it can work on; meanwhile, users see visual cues and can stop it anytime. Agent Mode also honors existing data protection policies like DLP and usage rights restrictions (this also applies to multi-tab reasoning), so there are no loopholes in how data can be used. It also won't access saved passwords or payment methods, and it pauses on sensitive actions for explicit user engagement. You may have questions about risks that are particular to agentic browsing, which we have also covered in a separate technical blog for Copilot Mode. Controls for Secure AI Browsing. Agentic controls: Agend Mode enabled via additional toggle, allow list of sites must be provided, honors existing data protections, no access to savec passwords and payment methods, pauses on sensitive actions for user input. Copilot Mode: A switch to toggle on advanced AI browsing. Enterprise data protection: prompts, responses, files stay within tenant boundaries, Microsoft solely a data processor. These protections aren't an add-on—they're foundational to Edge for Business and ready from day one. Starting today, you can enable Copilot Mode in the Edge management service to experience the Copilot-inspired new tab page. All other features are in private preview, and will be in public preview in February across Windows, Mac, iOS and Android.

Microsoft named a Leader in IDC MarketScape

These new AI capabilities are the future of browsing. But, with so many options in the market, what makes Edge for Business different? It's our industry-leading secure enterprise foundation. In case you missed it, Microsoft has been named a Leader in the IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Application Streaming and Enterprise Browsers 2025 Vendor Assessment (doc #US53004525e, July 2025). See our blog on this or download the excerpt here to see for yourself. And of course, Microsoft is a recognized leader in security, identity, and endpoint management, and is acknowledged as a premier Zero Trust platform provider. These are the security technologies integrated into Edge for Business. Simply put, we bring world class security to every layer of the browser stack.

Protect browsing for contractors

While securing AI browsing is critical, it's only part of the story—organizations still need to protect day-to-day work browsing, especially for contractors. When you hire contractors, you want to maintain control over how your corporate data is accessed and protected. Yet in many cases, a contractor's device is managed by their contracting agency, not by you—creating security and compliance challenges. And providing secure access to them may be more costly and complex than you'd like. There's a better way. Today, admins can already support BYOD scenarios on Edge for Business with Microsoft Intune app protection policies. With this update, Edge for Business now extends these policies to Windows PCs managed by other organizations. Contractors simply set up an Edge profile on their agency-managed device, creating a controlled browser environment. From there, admins can enforce policies that stay active throughout the Edge profile. Files download securely to a OneDrive for Business location instead of local drives, and a new Intune protection policy for Windows unenrolled devices that restricts copying data, keeps sensitive information within your managed boundary. Contractors get the access they need, while you maintain control. The result? Flexibility for your workforce, security for your organization, and peace of mind for you, with cost savings that help your bottom line. Protections for contractor devices will be in preview in early 2026. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFpfIXCBzp0

Watermarking for sensitive files and sites

When it comes to data security, IT admins need safeguards that protect data without slowing users down. That's why we're announcing watermarking in Edge for Business, to provide protection that keeps work moving. Watermarking adds a persistent visual reminder on files and sites marked as sensitive. This makes confidential content easier to identify and also reminds users to handle data carefully. Admins can enable watermarking with a single toggle in the Edge management service. The overlay appearance is based on the DLP restriction policies for the file or site, ensuring compliance without extra effort. The result? Users stay aware, accidental sharing is reduced, and organizations maintain control, all without slowing down workflows. Now available in preview. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92kbODkxoAk

Protecting copy/paste actions

Admins face a tough "all or nothing" call with copy/paste: lock it down and frustrate users, or allow it and risk data leaks. Neither option feels right, and both can slow productivity. That's why today, we're announcing Protected Clipboard in Edge for Business, designed to keep data safe without breaking workflows. It leverages existing Purview DLP policies for managed cloud apps to let you define trusted boundaries across your managed web apps. Data inside the admin defined boundary can't be pasted outside, while data from outside can enter if needed. Users get clear warnings for out-of-bound actions, so they know exactly what's happening. Granular control for you and uninterrupted productivity for your users. Now available in preview. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_NtCQ4AYaA

Unify policy management across platforms

Managing browser policies across multiple platforms can be complex, and admins need a consistent, secure way to keep everything aligned. That's why the Edge management service was built: to deliver lightweight, browser-focused management that admins can trust. It's received great feedback, but so far, admins have only been able to manage Windows PCs through the tool. Now, this support extends even further. With new cross‑platform policies in the Microsoft 365 admin center, you can manage Edge across Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android—all from one dashboard. Simply select the platforms you need, configure policies broadly or fine‑tune individual settings, and maintain consistent security without switching tools. It's the same management platform you already trust—now extended to help keep your organization secure, no matter what devices your users choose. Available in preview now. Learn more here.

Simplify prerelease testing with built-in flexibility

Testing prerelease builds has often been a hassle. Rolling out a separate Beta app alongside Stable usually means extra installs, low engagement, and delays in validating updates. And if something breaks, users are stuck and productivity suffers. Now, Edge for Business is making testing simpler and more flexible. Enterprise preview brings Beta builds right inside the Stable Edge app—no extra installs for admins, no app switching for users. This allows you to spot regressions early, so issues can be fixed before they stop work down the line. With the Edge management service and Intune, you can set policies to decide who gets preview builds and whether rollback to Stable is allowed. That rollback option gives users a safety net and lets you crowdsource validation without slowing work. With everything in one app, testing becomes part of the normal workflow—giving admins more control without compromising security or productivity. Available in preview by the end of this year.

Take control of browser extensions

Extensions are everywhere in business environments, yet admins often have limited visibility into what's running on managed browsers. That blind spot can be a security risk: if you don't know what's installed, you can't protect your data. Extension monitoring in Microsoft Edge for Business changes that. Through the Edge management service, admins get a complete inventory of installed extensions, see how many users have each one, and track requests for blocked extensions. Admins can manage those requests and set installation policies—all from one simple, centralized page. With visibility and control in one place, managing extension risk becomes simple and proactive. Available in preview in early 2026.

Microsoft Edge for Business is your secure enterprise browser

With the growing use of SaaS and cloud services, the browser is the most used app on a PC. And with this single app, you need to meet the wide range of use cases in your organization, including elevated security and data control scenarios. The good news is that you already have the right browser ready to go, pre-installed on Windows. Edge for Business is a secure enterprise browser optimized for AI that can help meet the security and productivity needs of your entire organization, as a single browser. It supports advanced security features such as data loss prevention, unmanaged device support, and even generative AI controls. With Edge for Business, you get more security without the hassle of a ton of extensions, since it extends the enterprise-grade protections from your Microsoft 365 E3 and E5 licenses, at no additional cost. This security is backed by Microsoft, a leader in security, compliance, identity, and endpoint management.

    Management made simple

To configure your secure enterprise browser, you need a robust management solution. If you're a pro at policy management or are an enterprise customer, you likely use Microsoft Intune to configure policies, and you can manage Edge for Business there too. For browser specialists, small or medium sized businesses, or those that want a guided experience, we recommend the Edge management service in the Microsoft 365 admin center. Customers love its easy-to-use UI, AI controls, and organizational branding features, and now it's even better with the added capability to set Intune policies. This enables you to deploy both browser policies in the cloud and Intune policies from a single pane, making it easy to keep users safe and your browser workflow streamlined. The ability to deploy Intune policies in the Edge management service is now in preview.

Safely introduce and control AI in your organization

AI is a big productivity accelerator, yet it also presents a big challenge with unsanctioned AI use. The Edge management service offers a comprehensive solution for overseeing AI in Edge for Business. You can restrict access to public AI services that may not meet your organization's compliance requirements, as well as exert precise control over Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft's AI chat for the web and work. Edge for Business offers an integrated Copilot experience with enterprise data protection that addresses data leakage and other AI security concerns. Not all browsers offer integrated AI chat with enterprise-grade data protection, and at no additional cost. You also have the power to manage the browser's AI features that are independent of Copilot, such as text prediction and AI-generated themes. Managing Copilot and other AI usage in the Edge management service is generally available, and you can learn more here.

Deploy encrypted shared passwords with ease

There's a known security gap that you may have been tolerating out of necessity—a common password shared across a set of users. Whether it's a team accessing the same data repository or managing common social media accounts, passwords are often passed around in emails, chats, and even on paper. This risky practice can lead to unapproved users gaining access and serious downstream consequences. Secure password deployment in the Edge management service can help put an end to this. It enables you to deploy encrypted shared passwords to a set of users, allowing them to log into websites seamlessly without ever seeing the actual passwords, reducing the risk of unauthorized access and enhancing your organization's overall security posture. Secure password deployment will be available in preview in the coming months for Microsoft 365 Business Premium, E3, and E5 subscriptions. Secure password deployment UI in the Edge management service

    Keep your estate up-to-date

Keeping all browser instances up-to-date is crucial to protect against threats. The Edge management service offers a single view of all managed Edge instances with their update status and possible actions to take. For out-of-date devices, you can easily schedule updates or notify users to update their browser to avoid workflow interruptions. This feature is now in public preview. admin's view in the Edge management service of the Edge update status across their organization

Protect your Microsoft Office documents on the web

Managing sensitive Microsoft Office documents on the web has traditionally posed significant challenges due to insufficient leak controls in the browser. Edge for Business now respects usage rights restrictions on sensitive Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, such as blocking screen captures. It leverages Microsoft Purview Information Protection settings that were previously only for desktop Office apps, enhancing protections for editing, printing, and copying on the web. This protection is native and exclusive to Edge for Business. Microsoft Purview Information Protection for online Microsoft 365 documents is currently in preview and will be generally available by the end of the year. To prevent unintentional sharing of sensitive information, we strongly recommend disabling other browsers that lack adequate document protection, so users do not accidentally expose content through security loopholes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xYs0stcgm4

    Support any device, anywhere

Managing data security across personal and unmanaged devices has become a new norm with hybrid work. With Microsoft Intune's Mobile Application Management (MAM), you can help ensure that your organization's data remains secure even on these devices, without requiring device enrollment. By leveraging Intune's app protection policies, you can help safeguard sensitive information, enforce compliance, and provide a seamless user experience across Windows 10, Windows 11, and mobile devices. Whether your employees are using company-owned or personal devices, MAM helps ensure that your organization's data is protected, enabling secure and productive work environments. Unmanaged device support using Intune MAM is currently available. Learn more about Intune MAM and how to use it for mobile devices.

Detect scams in real time with scareware blocker

Online scams have become increasingly sophisticated, to the point where you may feel it's out of your control to protect yourself and your users—even those who are technologically savvy. One particular type of scam is "scareware". It takes over the entire browser screen, creating a sense of urgency and panic that pressures people to act quickly, potentially granting the scammer remote access to their computer. These scams appear and vanish within hours—often before any preventative action can be taken. To combat such scams, Edge is introducing new, no-cost capabilities to help identify scareware in real-time to help make the internet a safer place both inside and outside of work. Scareware blocker uses machine learning (ML) to identify these scams. Upon finding a potential danger, it displays a warning to alert users. If the user identifies the website as safe, they are still in control and can continue to the page. For organizations, using scareware blocker helps prevent attacks that could attempt to gain remote access. This helps to protect your network and your employees. Scareware blocker will be in public preview in the coming months. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcJKbba2AjY

Management for partners is getting easier with new policies in Microsoft 365 Lighthouse

For partners, Microsoft 365 Lighthouse is a game-changer. It provides Managed Service Providers (MSPs) with a powerful tool to manage customers at scale. Lighthouse facilitates multi-tenant management, giving you a clear view and control over all your customers. You can quickly set up security settings for Microsoft Edge for Business, so that policies are consistently applied across all your customers, saving you time while enhancing security. We're excited to announce that additional Edge for Business policies will be coming to Lighthouse, making it even easier for partners to manage and secure their customers' web browsers. These new policies include customization abilities, such as adding organization branding; enhanced security features, such as password monitoring and generation; and other configurations, such as allowing Copilot to access page content and allowing single sign-on. These policies will be available in Lighthouse in public preview in the coming months. Learn more here.

Calm tab chaos with just a few clicks

We know security is a top concern, but you also want to drive productivity for your organization. Edge for Business comes packed with useful tools that help your users stay organized and tame the chaos. If you're someone who constantly has a ton of tabs open, you probably know how chaotic it can be to locate the specific tab you need. With vertical tabs, you can more easily read the page titles by displaying the tabs on the side rather than horizontally on top. Furthermore, you can group your tabs together with a name and color, so they are even more organized. If you don't have time to group your tabs individually, Edge for Business can do it for you. AI detects the common themes across your tabs and groups them together for instant organization. And, you can easily adjust the groupings to suit your preferences. These tab groups remain synced across your devices, ensuring you stay organized regardless of your location. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PICEfaEZ4f0 When you're working on multiple projects, it's easy for project tabs to get mixed together, wasting your time as you search for the right one. But what if all your tabs for each project were separated into their own neatly organized windows? Edge workspaces do just that. Workspaces let you open a group of tabs together, so you can bring up a whole project's tabs in one go. You can also share the workspace with others, so your team can access all the project resources with just one link. Workspaces allow you to switch between projects quickly, and you can close out of your workspace with all your tabs auto-saved to come back to it later. Between tab groups and workspaces, using Edge for Business makes it easier to manage your work and projects. To get started with these, download and share the tip sheet. Vertical tabs, tab groups, and Workspaces are currently available. Learn more here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k68GRWzZDF8

Today, we're excited to announce new AI-powered features available in Microsoft Edge that can help you enhance and express your creativity, stay focused, and get more done. Check out our latest features below.

Now available: Personalize your browser experience with AI-generated themes

Over the years, we've made a wide variety of browser themes available to allow our users to personalize their experience. We've also seen how AI can help you express your creativity and make things your own. This is why today we're excited to announce we're taking browser personalization to the next level with the official launch of Edge Theme Generator. You are now able to create your own personalized Edge browser theme, using generative AI, and powered by Microsoft Designer. Now, anything you can imagine, you can turn into your very own custom browser theme. From designing a beautiful summer landscape to help you get through your workday or even prep for fantasy football season with your very own custom image to rep your team, Theme Generator can help you create it. You will also be able to customize the color of your browser frame to match your browser theme. To get started, simply visit the theme generator website and in the prompt box, describe the theme you want to create and Edge will generate it for you. Don't have anything specific in mind? Not to worry, you can also have Edge surprise you by creating a theme on your behalf. There are also prompt templates available if you need inspiration. And if you're particularly proud of your custom theme, be sure to share it on your social channels – another user can even apply your theme to their browser. We cannot wait to see all that you'll create! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rukSVLO3eoY

Edge Workspaces gets a boost with AI

We've seen so many examples of Copilot in Edge helping people be more productive and streamlined as they browse. Copilot can help you find what you're looking for, faster. It can help you write an email and get it ready to send on your behalf. It has begun to make your day to day easier, freeing up time for you to do more of what you love. And today, we want to share an exciting new feature to not only help you get more done, but also streamline your collaboration with others, reducing friction. Edge Workspaces already helps you get more done whether you're collaborating with others or tackling something solo – it keeps all the information you need for a project in one place through saved windows, so you can stay focused and organized across tasks. Today, we're excited to share the integration of AI with Edge Workspaces – which means now you'll be able to set up and start using your own workspace even faster. To get started, simply type your query into the Bing search bar, like "plan a trip to Croatia". From there, you'll see a pop up asking you if you want to create a new Edge Workspace with AI for the trip. Once you select "New Workspace", it will open automatically showing your original search along with prepopulated tabs formatted into tab groups, all from the power of AI. What's better, you can invite others to this dedicated space. So, if you're going on that trip to Croatia with family or friends, they too can access it, and be able to see all the options you've found for lodging and things to do, eliminating the need to share links via text or email back and forth. Those with access to the workspace can also add tabs and make updates at their own pace, and all these updates can be seen across those in the group in real time, allowing everyone to stay on the same page. This feature is now in preview, and we'll continue to add more search queries and roll out to more users over time. Also, remember that while AI generated Workspaces is still in preview, user-generated workspaces are already generally available to help you get more done, together. Reduce browser data exfiltration with expanded screenshot prevention across more apps and AI tools

With a simple screenshot, it can be easy for your organization's data to be exfiltrated to another party or shared with AI. To help stop this, we’re excited to announce that the data leak control capabilities in Edge for Business are expanding to support screenshot prevention policies. When these policies are set, screenshot attempts while using Edge on desktop will be prevented by showing a black screen instead of the protected content. This protection also applies to Copilot in the Edge sidebar so prompts and responses in Copilot cannot be captured by screenshot. These policies can be set across Microsoft 365, Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps (MDA), Microsoft Intune Mobile Application Management (MAM) and Microsoft Purview. This will give your organization additional protection to help keep sensitive data from leaking. Edge for Business support for screenshot prevention will become available in the coming months. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfvfDMEbQFs[/embed]

Improved leak protection in sensitive Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents in Edge

We're also expanding the ability for Edge for Business to honor usage rights restrictions on Word, Excel and PowerPoint files marked as sensitive. You can now limit the ability for Copilot to reference highly sensitive content via sensitivity labels, as well as restrict screen capture. These advanced restrictions from sensitivity labels have not been possible in any browser until now. This expanded protection will allow Edge to take full advantage of the settings you can already apply to these documents in the desktop apps. It also builds on the editing, printing and copying protections already available in Edge today. With this exclusive and native browser support, you can have a greater peace of mind that your sensitive data has more safeguards when using Edge for Business. This will be available in the coming weeks. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLArkiSjW4o[/embed]

Easily keep your estate up-to-date with Edge management service

Ensuring that all browser instances are up-to-date is essential to defend against threat actors. Here’s how we’re making it easier than ever for you. The Edge management service was launched as a reimagining of how browser management and configuration should work for you. We’re continuing to invest in simplifying IT workflows and are excited to share that you can now get a single view into managed Edge instances. You can easily know which instances are up-to-date or not. If you need to enforce actions from there, you can schedule a one-time update or send a recommendation to the user to update their browser to prevent workflow interruptions. You can also add extra browser protections, such as disabling just-in-time JavaScript compilation, by turning on enhanced security mode. With this consolidated view of your Edge instances, you can stay ahead of threats and reduce vulnerabilities on your managed devices. This will be available in public preview in the coming weeks. Extend MDA protections to Edge sessions on unmanaged devices

With the rise of hybrid work, you may have noticed more unmanaged devices accessing your network. To help protect your data in Edge beyond managed devices, we have enabled unmanaged device support with Intune MAM to provide app protections and the ability to wipe organizational data. To bring you even more protection, Edge for Business now has native support for session policies with MDA. This provides granular controls over site protections that let you take actions such as blocking or monitoring file downloads and uploads, clipboard actions and printing on unmanaged devices. These policies will be applied directly to users signed into Edge with their Entra ID. This will achieve better performance since there is no need for the proxy used in other browsers. And with no need for JavaScript-based enforcement controls, you gain better WebApp compatibility and more compliance for work resource access. This is available in public preview today. Make Edge for Business your own with organization branding

It’s hard work configuring your browsers to protect your data and provide a unified experience for your organization. To help this, you can customize Edge for Business to make it your own by applying your organization's branding. Through the Edge management service, you can add your company name, color and logo to customize the look and feel. With visual cues in the profile pill, profile flyout and taskbar icon, your users will know that they are working in the browser you’ve configured to maximize their productivity and safety. This is available today. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7Ffyp93Hn4[/embed]

Get multiple AI services under control with Edge management service

With the Edge management service, you have a one-stop-shop for managing AI in Edge for Business. Within a configuration profile, you can block public AI services that may not be compliant for your organization and also have fine-tune control over Copilot, such as enabling or disabling Copilot from accessing page content. You can also manage the browser’s AI features outside of Copilot, such as enabling or disabling text predictions, “Find on page” suggestions for websites, or AI generated themes. When logged into Edge with an eligible Entra ID, your users will have these settings applied to Edge and the added benefit of commercial data protection when using Copilot. Now you can have confidence that you are in control of how your organization’s data interacts with AI. EMS enterprise secure AI settings screen

Get videos translated in real time with Edge

There's more video content available than ever, but much of it is inaccessible to large parts of the population due to language barriers and hearing disabilities. Real-time video translation uses AI to translate videos into available preferred languages in real-time through audio dubbing and/or subtitles. With just a few clicks, you’ll be able to open the door to watching many more video across a variety of languages. Simply click on the translate icon, select the current and preferred language, and let AI do the rest. Real-time video translation is coming soon to popular video websites such as YouTube, LinkedIn, Reuters, CNBC News, Bloomberg, Coursera and more. It’ll be available from English to German, Hindi, Italian, Russian and Spanish, and from Spanish and Korean to English, with additional languages and video websites coming in the future. Stay organized with Workspaces – now with AI and on mobile

Workspaces help you organize your tabs by project, so you can quickly pull up a browser window with all the related tabs saved together. And now, Workspaces are getting even better with AI. Copilot and Bing search can create a workspace with pre-populated tabs to help you get started on your projects. In Copilot in Edge, simply type “Create a workspace for,” followed by the topic of your choice, and your workspace is automatically created with a selection of suggested websites. You’ll also see a pop-up box to help you create a workspace when you search your topic in Bing. Now, you can kickstart your projects more easily while knowing that your work will be automatically saved and kept up to date. Creating a workspace through Bing search is available in preview today, and creating a workspace through Copilot will be available in preview soon. And in addition to AI, Workspaces will be coming to mobile, so you can take your workspaces with you wherever you go. Workspaces will be in preview for Android mobile devices in the next few months. Keep your browser tidy with tab auto-grouping

If you’re someone who always has lots of tabs open across different topics and interests, we’ve got a fast and easy solution for you. Announced last year, tab auto-grouping uses the power of AI to automatically group your browser tabs by theme with group names and colors to differentiate them. You can either select “Organize tabs” in the tab actions menu or ask Copilot to do it for you. Find your important tabs with ease today! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwKU387ifZQ AI is becoming essential for work to keep pace in today’s digital world. Microsoft Edge for Business is here as your secure enterprise browser, optimized for AI. Check out the announcements to learn more about Copilot with commercial data protection, and refer to this short video for security configuration options for Edge for Business and AI. You can now ask DevTools to explain any error or warning, and any code snippet by using Copilot in Edge.

Uncaught (in promise) SyntaxError: Unexpected token '<', "<!DOCTYPE "... is not valid JSON. Uncaught TypeError: Converting circular structure to JSON. Uncaught TypeError: Cannot define property x, object is not extensible. These errors can very often feel cryptic, especially when learning web development. But they also play a very important role in learning. They're how the browser tells you something's wrong, where it's wrong, and perhaps how to fix the problem. Unlike other languages, JavaScript doesn't require a compilation step to run. C++ or Rust, for example, give you a lot of information at compilation time. With JavaScript, these runtime errors in the DevTools console are often your only way to know something's wrong. But let's face it, compilers and JS engines are similar in that they don't always make it easy to understand what they're trying to say. Common solutions include:
    • Searching for the error message online, hoping to find a useful answer.
    • Or asking a coworker for help.
Unfortunately, this doesn't always lead to a good solution. For instance, what if no one has written a clear explanation for your particular problem online? What if you don't have a coworker who can help you right now? What if you're focused on your code and don't want to get distracted by going to another website? Given the right context, Copilot in Edge can reason about complex problems and easily find custom solutions for them. If you use Microsoft Edge for your web development, you already have access to Copilot in Edge. You can already use Copilot in the Microsoft Edge sidebar to generate text or images, or search for web results. Starting with Microsoft Edge version 120, you can now ask Copilot to explain console errors and warnings, as well as source code, right from where you need it in DevTools! Microsoft Edge with DevTools and Copilot both visible. Errors are shown in the Console, and Copilot is explaining what one of the errors mean. With Copilot in Edge integrated into DevTools you can:
    • Ask Copilot to explain any error or warning displayed in the Console. Just click the Copilot button next to an error:A Console error from DevTools, showing the Copilot icon next to it
    • Ask Copilot to explain any snippet of code selected in the Sources tool. Just select some code, right-click, and choose Copilot: Explain these lines of code: The Sources tool in DevTools. Some code is selected and the contextual menu is displayed. The Copilot menu item is selected.
When you do any of these two actions, the Copilot in Edge sidebar appears, and a conversation about the error, warning, or code that you selected starts. DevTools provides all the context that Copilot needs to reason about the particular problem you're facing. Copilot generates an explanation, and you can then keep conversing if you want to keep on learning. We're excited about the possibilities and truly believe that AI, when applied responsibly to specific web development problems, can be a very effective ally. This is only the beginning, and we have more ideas. But first, we'd love for you to try this new experimental feature and let us know what you think. To learn more about enabling the experiment and using the feature, read the docs at Explain errors and source code in Copilot in Edge. The feature is still under active development and you might need to enable it, before being able to use it. Copilot will be out of preview and become generally available starting December 1. And the best part – you may already have access to it at no additional cost with eligible Microsoft 365 licenses! Over time, we will also expand eligibility of Copilot with commercial data protection to even more Entra ID (formerly Azure Active ID) users at no additional cost. And that's not all. Today we also announced new features in Edge for Business across security, manageability, and productivity that will transform the way you and your users use the browser at work. Jump to the following sections to learn more:

Browser management just got easier with Copilot in Microsoft 365 admin center

Browser management is a complex and time-consuming task, but we want to make it easier for you. We're excited to announce that Copilot will be coming to the Edge management service via Copilot in Microsoft 365 admin center, providing a simple and intelligent management experience for Edge for Business. Available in private preview, Copilot in the Edge management service can offer guidance and educate you on suggested policies and extensions for your users. More capabilities will be added in the future. Copilot in Microsoft 365 admin center will provide a shared set of controls and skills across other Microsoft admin centers as well, including in SharePoint, Teams, and more to create a coherent admin Copilot experience across management services. With the new Copilot in Microsoft 365 admin center, IT management has never been easier. See it in action in our new video.

Configure Copilot in Edge simply using the Edge management service

How can you safely configure Copilot in Edge for your organization? With the Edge management service in the Microsoft 365 admin center, it's simple. You can easily manage and configure Copilot settings, including allowing or preventing access to sensitive data, as well as additional AI features in Edge such as text prediction. These new capabilities in the Edge management service allow you to enable your users to safely access AI while still maintaining control of how and what they can access. Copilot configurations in the Edge management service will soon be available in preview.

Enable extension management in Edge management service

Enabling your users to access extensions while maintaining organization security can be a balancing act. We just made it easier by developing a new feature in the Edge management service to simplify the process of granting extension requests from your users. Users can search for extensions in Edge Add-ons to find the one they want to download. If it's blocked, they'll see a "Request" button next to the extension, allowing them to request access with business justification. You can customize how often you want to be notified via email of these requests. You can then act on the request by allowing or blocking the extension for a configuration profile. This will notify the user of your decision along with your justification for the decision and the details of the extension. With this new feature, users can request tools to make them more productive in their workday, while you still maintain control of what your users can access. This extension management feature will be available early next year.

    A simplified Intune experience

No matter what tool you use to manage Edge for Business, we want to make it easy for you. That's why we're integrating the simplicity of the Edge management service with the power of Intune. This new experience aims to simplify the deployment of a productive and secure configuration for Edge for Business by incorporating experiences like dynamic JSON support for complex policies and policy-merging improvements. Soon, you'll be able to experience the simplified Edge for Business Intune experience in preview to help save you time in IT management.

Protect sensitive data with Data Loss Prevention (DLP) for Copilot in Edge

Protecting your company's sensitive data is critical, and you may be wondering how that's affected with the rise of AI. Edge for Business, with the help of Microsoft Purview data loss prevention, enforces the sensitivity labels classified by IT admins for websites and documents. As a result, Copilot can only access corporate data if you allow it and if the website the user is on is not labeled as sensitive. Learn more about this here.

Enable users to securely access corporate resources from unmanaged devices

In today's hybrid world, people are working using a variety of devices across a variety of locations. This can make the already difficult task of securing corporate data even harder. Edge for Business ensures your users have access to a secure enterprise browser no matter where they are or what device they use. With Intune Mobile Application Management, or MAM, users can sign in and use corporate resources from unmanaged devices, such as personal laptops or mobile devices, without putting your organization's data at risk. With Intune MAM policies, you can stop data leakage by limiting actions like copy-paste, print, or save as, and even erase the data remotely if the device is lost or stolen. Users simply sign into Microsoft Edge with their work account to securely access corporate resources anywhere. Managing email and chat can be overwhelming, especially if you receive dozens or more every day. And no one likes to go through old emails and chats just to find a specific link that has been shared with them. Now, even if links were originally shared with you in Outlook and Microsoft Teams, we've made it easy to find them in the place where you open links—the web browser. With the new shared links feature, links shared from these apps are collected and sorted by people and dates, so you can easily find relevant links instead of hunting through endless emails and chats—or worse, reaching back out to the colleagues who sent them. Just like an inbox, it's a home for all the links that colleagues are sharing with you, so you can quickly find what you need. And you can even filter the links shared with you by type of link, what app it came from, keywords, or a specific date or person to further refine the results and find what you're looking for. Try the Shared links preview today in the enterprise new tab page and in Edge mobile (both iOS and Android) by turning on the Edge Shared links flag on the edge://flags page. It is also currently available as prepopulated results in the Edge address bar on desktop and will be available soon in the Edge sidebar. An image of a phone showing the website links shared by a colleague

Summarize videos with Copilot in Microsoft Edge

People use videos to keep up with industry news, check out the latest products, and learn new things in a visual way. Soon, Copilot and Copilot in Edge will offer the ability to summarize or answer questions about YouTube videos based on their captions. Simply open a YouTube video with captions, select the Copilot icon in the sidebar, and enter a prompt to summarize the video or provide a list of key takeaways. You'll get a short summary followed by timestamps with key moments from the video that you can navigate to. This feature will be in preview soon, with plans to expand compatibility with other sites with video content.

Workspaces – now generally available for everyone, plus new "lock tab" functionality

Edge Workspaces, first announced at last year's Ignite, helps you collaborate and stay on the same page with a shared set of browser tabs. Next month, Workspaces will become generally available for consumer use in addition to commercial use, so you can experience the power of Workspaces to help organize projects at home or at work. We've also heard your feedback that it's easy to accidentally delete an important tab from your workspace. To remedy this, we added the ability for workspace members to lock tabs in their workspaces. To lock a tab, right click the opened tab and select "Lock tab" from the menu. Now, users cannot delete the tab, which is signified with a lock icon. Users can still navigate to other pages within the tab, but it will only show on their end, whereas other workspace members will still see the locked tab. Selecting the reset button will take the user back to the page where they locked the tab. The user that locked the tab can also unlock it by right clicking on the tab and selecting "Unlock tab". Now, users can have peace of mind that their important tabs aren't going anywhere, no matter how many people they invite to their workspace.

Customize Edge for Business with optional company branding in the browser frame

Want to customize the look of Edge for Business? Now you can with optional company branding! With company branding, you can add your organization's name and brand color to the profile pill, your organization's name, brand color, and logo to the flyout, and your organization's logo to overlay the Edge for Business icon on the taskbar. This customization can help users more easily decipher which browser windows are work-related, and which are personal browser windows. It's also helpful for those who have accounts for multiple companies, such as consultants, to visually differentiate between browser windows. You can add company branding to Edge for Business for your users in the next month through a group policy, with additional customizations to come in the future. An image of Contoso company branding. The Contoso name appears next to the user’s profile photo and the Contoso name and brand colors appear in the profile flyout

Boost productivity with AI features in Edge for Business

    Compose

We know how challenging and time-consuming writing can be, whether you're working on an important email, report, presentation, or more. Well, with Compose, writing just got a lot easier! Compose in the Edge for Business sidebar creates drafts for you using AI - simply enter a short description of what you want it to write about. It's also customizable, so you can change the tone, length, and format of the draft to fit exactly what you're looking for. And, Compose comes with the same data protections as Copilot with commercial data protection. Write with Compose today by clicking the Copilot icon in the top right corner of Edge for Business.

    Tab auto-grouping

If you're like me, then you probably struggle with having way too many tabs open. Now, with the tab auto-grouping feature in Edge for Business your browser can look a lot more organized. Tab auto-grouping uses AI to group your tabs based on tab similarity. To use tab auto-grouping, select the Tab Action Menu located next to your tabs and select "Group similar tabs". You can also pin these groups if you want them to stay when you close/reopen the browser, as well as give them a name and color. Tab auto-grouping is currently available in both horizontal and vertical tabs to help you get organized with ease. Image showing a user selecting to group similar tabs

Edge for everyone – Accessibility features

    Magnify

Have you ever wanted to zoom in on a small image without losing track of your current page? With this new feature you can magnify any image in your browser with just a click. Whether you want to see more details, read small text, or enjoy the beauty of high-resolution photos, Magnify will enhance your browsing experience. Simply hover over an image and press the CTRL key to activate or simply right click and select magnify image from the menu. Magnify will be available in preview in the coming months.

    Read aloud

If you need or want web content spoken to you, Read aloud is for you! Read aloud can read your web and PDF content to you in a variety of speeds, voices, and accents. Designed to help make content more accessible, Read aloud is currently available and can be accessed from the address bar, right click context menu, "Settings and more" menu, or via Immersive Reader. while protecting our sensitive data online. Microsoft Edge is here to help you recapture the essence of the holidays, giving you the tools to tackle your to-do list with ease so you can focus more on joy and connection this season. Remember, if you're running a Windows PC, you already have Microsoft Edge installed, so check it out and see why Microsoft Edge is the smarter way to browse. For those who want to try Microsoft Edge and are on a macOS, mobile or Linux device, download it and let us know what you think! Check out how Edge is your AI-powered assistant this holiday season.

A smarter way to find the perfect gift at the right price

It is no secret that shopping online is the status quo. The convenience of shopping in the comfort of your home, and the multitude of choices, makes it all very appealing. But it's not all rosy. More choices mean it can be very overwhelming to choose the right product at the best price. It gets even more difficult knowing what will fit our needs and what reviews to trust. All of this diminishes the convenience – and joy – of online shopping. Due to our powerful set of built-in features, Edge and Bing are here to help put the joy back into shopping, by making it easier for you to discover or find what you need in less time, all while experiencing the thrill of scoring great deals. With that in mind, I'm excited to announce the latest features available in Edge and Bing:
    • In September, we announced Copilot in Microsoft Shopping and today I'm pleased to share it is now rolling out and will be widely available soon, just in time to make your holiday shopping easier. Copilot in Microsoft Shopping is designed to be your own personal shopper and help you find what you need in less time. You can give it prompts like “what are some gift ideas for teenage boys?” and Copilot will ask you a set of intelligent questions to help narrow down ideas for gifts for your nephew. Coming soon, you'll also be able to simply share a picture of the product you're looking for, and Copilot will guide you to the right match. This experience is available on PC to start and will be coming to mobile soon. To access Copilot in Microsoft Shopping, simply open your Edge browser, then in the address bar enter https://bing.com/shop/ai to get started. Copilot in Microsoft Shopping is available on any browser, but to unlock the best experience (and savings!), we recommend Microsoft Edge. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcTXbroi4SE[/embed]
    • It's not just the overwhelming number of choices on the internet that makes online shopping so challenging. Knowing what reviews and product ratings to trust can be time-consuming. In June, we announced Review Summaries and today I'm pleased to say that it's now widely available. Edge and Bing can do the work for you and help you shop with confidence, giving you a quick look at top insights and popular opinions about the product. To access Review Summaries, simply click on the Copilot icon from the Edge sidebar and ask it to summarize what people are saying about an item online.

Stay safer while you shop online

While we all enjoy the convenience and choices that shopping online offers, the flip side of this is it results in transactions using our private information, especially our credit cards. Microsoft Edge is loaded with security features and advanced controls designed to keep even the most tech-savvy users safer from online threats.
    • Let's start with our newest feature, Edge Secure Network. This feature gives you security protection that is smart enough to automatically turn on when you need it most. Edge Secure Network uses VPN technology to stop third parties and bad actors from accessing your sensitive information, so you can make purchases online, fill out forms, and keep your browsing activity away from prying eyes. A lot of us are probably traveling this season and sometimes accessing open Wi-Fi networks at airports or coffee shops. Edge Secure Network will turn on in those instances and even when you visit a website that isn't secured by HTTPS. To get started, sign into Microsoft Edge with your personal Microsoft account, and toggle on Edge Secure Network in Browser Essentials. This feature is built-in to the browser and free to use.The browser essentials sidebar in Microsoft Edge, showing the Secure Network section
    • With Password Health indicator and Password Monitor, we aim to give you peace of mind. These two features combined can help you keep an eye on potentially leaked log-in information and let you know if the password you're setting on retailer sites this holiday season is strong enough. This is so valuable because, let's face it, many of us have racked up quite a list of log-in credentials over the years. At Microsoft Edge, we want to provide tools that give you peace of mind and help you keep your credentials safer, while still enjoying the efficiencies that online shopping has to offer. The Passwords settings page in Edge wallet, showing a list of leaked passwords
    • Say you're wanting to check your bank account after a particularly long grocery and holiday shopping spree. But you're so tired from trying to juggle work, kids, and holiday prep that you add an extra letter to your bank's URL. A lot of scammers hope you do just that, standing up fraudulent sites with that misspelled URL and giving them an opportunity to steal your personal/financial information and/or trick you to buy false products. This is called typo squatting. Website typo protection keeps you safe from landing on a malicious site by suggesting the website you intended to visit. Now you can rest assured that you will get to the site you wanted to visit, with added peace of mind.
    • Lastly, one of the most tedious things we do online when shopping or booking travel is filling out all the information needed to check out. It takes precious time away from an already extensive to-do list and time with our loved ones. Autofill in Edge has gotten much smarter and can help you get through those holiday travel bookings much faster. As you're filling out your traveler details to book your flight, Autofill can now suggest completions when you type the first few characters in an online form field, so your saved info such as your passport number, frequent flyer account, and more can be quickly filled just by pressing right arrow or tab. Just go to Edge Settings > Profile to securely store and easily access your info.

Invitations, recipes, and all you need to entertain this holiday season

The best part of the holidays is spending time and making memories with our loved ones. And if you want to add party planner to your list of duties this season, with a little help, let Microsoft Edge spark your creativity, and save you time.
    • Copilot in Edge is your holiday planning assistant, helping you get through your to-do list in less time so you can enjoy the season. For example, if you are hosting a party, it is most likely that you'll need to send an invite, but it may feel daunting in the context of everything you have to get done. With Copilot in Edge, you can create a wow-worthy AI-generated image to add to your holiday party email invite. Simply access Copilot from the sidebar and give it your prompt to get started. Once you have your image ready, you can save a copy and email it to attendees or share on social media. Your guests will be delighted once they receive it, and your one-of-a-kind image will set the perfect, personalized tone for your upcoming soiree.Microsoft Edge, with Outlook in a tab, Copilot in Edge is in the sidebar and composed an email text
    • For that same party, Copilot in Edge can help you finalize many other details. For example, need the perfect mocktail recipe to go with your dinner menu? Copilot in Edge has your back. Let's say you are researching recipes that will work for your party. You can ask Copilot in Edge "what are some mocktails that would pair best" and Copilot will give you suggestions and find recipes for you. And every good dinner party needs the right music – Copilot will also help you build the perfect playlist for your gathering. With the help of Copilot in Edge, your dinner party will have every last detail sorted out, and only you will know that Edge and the power of AI allowed you to plan and prepare, smarter and more efficiently.Copilot in Edge offering mocktail suggestions by searching the web
    • Lastly, I wanted to share one of our latest features that has become an instant crowd favorite on social media. That feature is split screen. Let's face it, we never stop multitasking, and the holidays are probably the time of year that tests our multi-tasking limits. We recently launched split screen and since then, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. This tool allows you to simultaneously work on multiple tasks across two, side-by-side screens in one browsing tab with Microsoft Edge, helping boost your productivity and multitask more efficiently. Video super resolution in Microsoft Edge https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2023/03/08/video-super-resolution-in-microsoft-edge/ Wed, 08 Mar 2023 17:00:26 +0000 https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/?p=25238 Have you ever wished you could watch your favorite videos in high definition, even if they were originally recorded in lower quality? Well, now you can, thanks to a new feature we are experimenting with in Edge Canary: video super resolution (VSR).

Due to the computing power required to upscale videos, video super resolution (VSR) is currently offered when the following conditions are met:
    • The device has one of the following graphics cards (GPUs): Nvidia RTX 20/30/40 series OR AMD RX5700-RX7800 series GPUs. [1]
    • The video is played at less than 720p resolution.
    • The device is not on battery power.
    • Both the height and width of the video are greater than 192 pixels.
    • The video is not protected with Digital Rights Management technologies like PlayReady or Widevine. Frames from these protected videos are not accessible to the browser for processing.
[1] Note: We are working on automatic Hybrid GPU support for laptops with multiple GPUs. Meanwhile, you can try VSR by changing Windows settings to force Edge to run on your discrete GPU. Video super resolution is automatically enabled by Edge and indicated by an HD icon on the address. The feature can be computationally intensive, so this icon allows a user to be in full control of enabling or disabling the feature. Availability

As noted above, we’ve started experimenting with a small set of customers in the Canary channel and will continue to make this feature available to additional customers over the coming weeks. We are also looking forward to expanding the list of supported graphics cards in the future.

    Behind the Scenes

Let’s go into some additional details about how video super resolution, or VSR, works behind the scenes.

    ONNX Runtime and DirectML

VSR in Microsoft Edge builds on top of ONNX Runtime and DirectML making our solution portable across GPU vendors and allowing VSR to be available to more users. Additional graphics cards which support these technologies and have sufficient computing power will receive support in the future. The ONNX Runtime and DirectML teams have fine-tuned their technology over many years, resulting in VSR making the most of the performance and capabilities of your graphics card’s processing power. ONNX Runtime handles loading ML models packaged as an .onnx files and uses DirectML, which handles the optimization and evaluation of the ML workload by leveraging the available GPU capabilities such as the native ML tensor processing to achieve the maximum execution throughput at a high framerate.

    Storing Machine Learning Models

To preserve disk space, the components and models that VSR requires are only added to your device when we detect a compatible GPU. The presence of a component named “Edge Video Super Resolution” when visiting edge://components/ in Edge Canary is a signal that your GPU is supported by the video super resolution feature. This component-based approach lets us ship specific and multiple models based on device capability and performance.

    DirectX 11 Interop with DirectML

To support VSR, we have built a new DX12 presentation pipeline in Microsoft Edge. Chromium, which Microsoft Edge is built on, uses DX11 for video decode/rasterization and generates DX11 textures after video decode. DirectML on the other hand only works with DX12 buffers. To support VSR, we built a new flexible DX12 pipeline into the Chromium engine that's embedded in Microsoft Edge. Our new pipeline runs the shaders to convert DX11 textures into DirectML buffers/tensors for use with ONNX Runtime.

    Enable or Disable Video Enhancement

Video super resolution can be disabled at any time by clicking the HD icon in the address bar and selecting the toggle for Enhance Videos: The "HD" icon in the address bar is selected and displays a popup window title "Super resolution," with toggles for "Enhance images" and "Enhance videos." Both toggles are enabled and the "Enhance Videos" toggle is highlighted. The toggle description reads: "Enhance videos: Enhance low resolution videos to 720p when device is plugged in."Turning off video super resolution persists for all sites in Edge preferences. This will also restore any video super resolution features supported by the graphics card driver on your system. To change your preferences for the feature or provide feedback, you can find the toggle and the feedback buttons by navigating to edge://settings/system in your Edge browser.

The edge://settings/system page open with the setting for "Enhance videos in Microsoft Edge" highlighted. The description reads: "Sharpen videos and improve color, lighting, and contrast using super resolution for videos. Enhance low resolution videos (480p and below) when device is plugged in. Protected videos and videos that are small on the screen will not be enhanced."Video Quality Improvements

All the details above wouldn’t matter if we did not have great results. Let’s start with some comparisons of 360p videos with our current models:

    Model Performance Metrics

The super resolution model in Edge is quite good at upscaling a wide range of content types without any artifacts. To fit the in the performance envelope of your GPU, we typically use this model for videos resolutions ≤ 360p. If you want to inspect the performance of our video super resolution sub-system, you can navigate to edge://histograms/Microsoft.Media.Video.SuperResolution in another tab after viewing a few seconds of video content. For example, on a Nvidia RTX 2060, inference on the 360p sample above took 20ms per frame:Screenshot from edge://histograms/Microsoft.Media.Video.SuperResolution showing a mean of 20ms. Inference GPU time needs to be under 16ms for 60 FPS (1000ms/60frames) videos and under 33ms for 30fps video. To scale to higher resolutions and frame rate on this GPU, we have a separate, lighter model that we use for resolutions >360p. Please note that absolute inference time measured for this video upscaling workload doesn’t necessarily indicate the actual throughput of a GPU, since the GPU may be optimizing for power: because of fixed framerate that the video stream is displayed at, it is only necessary to finish the upscaling operation within the per-frame time interval, minimizing power consumption. This lighter model shines at on screen text and improves sharpness and readability. The model is 10 times smaller than our heavier model and should allow us to improve a larger set of video resolutions and give us an opportunity to enable video super resolution on lower end devices in the future. The policy to switch between models and picking the right model for the device, video resolution, framerate is something that we are actively iterating on.

Machine Learning Models & Model Compression

The stars of the show are the machine learning (ML) models from Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA). These models were distilled and compressed from a much larger model by our partners on the Microsoft DeepSpeed team. In this section we’ll discuss some of the approaches that the ML model development teams took to build these models.

    Model Training

Existing video super-resolution models aim to learn a mapping function that predicts high-quality (HQ) frames from their low-quality (LQ) or low-resolution counterparts. However, to generate low-quality/low-resolution frames for the training data set, most of these methods use predefined operators (e.g., bicubic down-sampling) to simulate the LQ input. This limits their general application on real-world video data, especially for streaming video data with high compression rates. In our approach, we take video compression into consideration and train our models with LQ-HQ video pairs that we synthesize by running several popular video codecs with different compression strategies. Inspired by the recent success in large language models, MSRA pre-trained a base video enhancement model on one million video clips from diverse categories by a self-supervised LQ-HQ restoration paradigm. By further considering multiple types of video compression artifacts from different codecs, the ML model can significantly recover different video content with a large range of video degradation levels (e.g., CRF (Constant Rate Factor) values from 15 to 35 in H. 264). To improve the visual quality of the model, we take a two-stage training strategy in which the first stage aims to recover structure information (e.g., the edge and boundary of objects) while the second stage is optimized with perceptual and generative adversarial objectives for high-frequency textures (e.g., tree leaves and human hairs).

    Loss Evaluation

Evaluation metrics in video enhancement tasks is another area we focused on. Existing metrics in this space like LPIPS (Learned Perceptual Image Patch Similarity) and FVD (Fréchet Video Distance) cannot fully reflect human perceptual preference. To better understand the performance of our models, MSRA team built an end-to-end pipeline for subjective evaluations of video enhancement tasks. Specifically, we ask participants to annotate their preferences for different methods on real-world video data from ten categories. The participants are asked to not only consider the static quality of each video frame but also take dynamic quality into account, which is more important for improving user experiences. The proposed pipeline shows that over 90% of users prefer our final models to the default bilinear upscaling in the browser.

    Model Compression

The base machine learning models certainly improve visual quality over the traditional bilinear up-sampling methods, but the high compute cost makes real-time inference a challenge on common consumer GPUs. To overcome this, the DeepSpeed team applied state-of-art compression techniques to reduce the model size and inference cost. The team used knowledge distillation and layer reduction from the XTC work and auto-pruning method from the LEAP work in DeepSpeed compression library to compress the model for Microsoft Edge device deployment. Edge provides two versions of the model, with the larger one having 10 times smaller model size (1MB) compared to the original base model and 5 times faster real-time inference on videos ≤ 360p in comparison to the original base model while still achieving over 95% win/on-par rate compared to the standard bilinear solution. The lighter version has an additional 10x reduction in model size (0.1MB) and 5x speedup on large resolution videos over the larger one with a 2x higher win-rate than the traditional bilinear baseline. By utilizing both models, we have broad real-time inference coverage for video super-resolution across GPU specs and video resolutions.
Video super resolution is an exciting feature that will make your video streaming experience more immersive and enjoyable. It will enhance the details and the beauty of your favorite content. We are working to improve the models and hardware coverage to provide better experience for even more users. Keep an eye out for updates from the team as we increase the availability to all Canary channel users over the coming weeks.]]>
